David Hacin is an architect + author living and working in Boston.

About

The only child of a Swiss architect and an American foreign policy expert, David Hacin was born in Geneva, Switzerland and grew up living on both sides of the Atlantic. Shuttling between divorced parents and their new families from a very early age, American David and European Janny has always enjoyed a nuanced, ‘split screen’ perspective on the worlds around him.

David received his Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from Princeton University summa cum laude and his Master of Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design with distinction. In the academic arena, David has taught and lectured at design schools across the country, including the Harvard Graduate School of Design, MIT, the University of Virginia, Northeastern, Kansas State, Roger Williams, and the Boston Architectural College, and he currently sits on the advisory board of the Wentworth Institute of Technology’s School of Architecture. Over more than forty years of professional life, David has participated on countless design juries and panels, contributed topical essays to online magazines, spoken at TEDx, recorded multiple podcasts, guest-edited the journal ArchitectureBoston, and edited his own firm’s award-winning design magazine, H+.

As the Founding Principal and Creative Director of Hacin, an interdisciplinary architecture and design studio founded in Boston in 1993, David and his 35+ person team have been dedicated to the highest standards of design excellence and client fulfillment. David has received global media coverage and won over 100 International, national, and regional awards in recognition of the studio’s broad portfolio of architecture, interior design, graphics, and branding. Further, David has served for over twenty years (and through three administrations) as a Mayoral appointee to the Boston Civic Design Commission and has volunteered on behalf of many community, professional and non-profit organizations in a wide variety of leadership roles, including at the Boston Society for Architecture, the Design Industry Groups of Massachusetts, Historic Boston, Inc., and the Boston Center for the Arts.

Reflecting his eclectic interests and passions, David was honored as a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and the New England Design Hall of Fame, both in 2010; he has also received the ‘Revere Bowl’ for his public service to the City of Boston; was named among the city’s ‘Best Dressed’ by both the Boston Globe and Saks Fifth Avenue; named ‘Best Architect’ by Boston Magazine; ‘On Fire’ by BostInno; and recently honored with the Boston Preservation Alliance President’s Award for his commitment to strengthening Boston’s unique character.

When not in his studio or on his laptop, David and his husband, Tim, can be found road-tripping around New England with their indomitable miniature schnauzer, Walter.
